Dry Eye Treatment in Bakersfield, CA

Dry, burning, gritty, watery, or irritated eyes can have many different causes. At Pinnacle Optometric Eye Care, we provide personalized dry eye evaluations to identify factors that may be contributing to your symptoms and recommend treatment based on your individual findings.

Our dry eye evaluations include examination of the ocular surface, tear film, eyelids, and meibomian glands, with additional testing when clinically indicated. Treatment recommendations are tailored to your symptoms, examination findings, and the underlying cause of your dry eye.

Common Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eye symptoms can vary from person to person and may be intermittent or persistent. Common symptoms include:

Burning or Stinging

Eyes may feel irritated, burning, or uncomfortable, particularly after prolonged visual tasks.

Gritty or Sandy Sensation

Dry eyes can create the feeling that something is in your eye even when no foreign body is present.

Watery Eyes

Excessive tearing can sometimes occur when the surface of the eye becomes dry or irritated.

Red or Irritated Eyes

Dryness and inflammation may cause the eyes to appear red or feel increasingly irritated.

Fluctuating or Blurry Vision

An unstable tear film can cause vision to fluctuate, particularly with reading, computer use, or prolonged focusing.

Contact Lens Discomfort

Dryness can make contact lenses feel uncomfortable or reduce comfortable wearing time. Learn more about our contact lens exams and fittings.

What Causes Dry Eye?

Dry eye can develop when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when tears evaporate too quickly. In many patients, the oil-producing meibomian glands along the eyelids do not function properly, causing tears to evaporate more quickly and the surface of the eye to become irritated.

Other factors can contribute to dry eye, including prolonged screen use, contact lens wear, certain medications, environmental conditions, hormonal or age-related changes, and some medical conditions. Because dry eye can have more than one cause, a comprehensive evaluation can help determine which factors may be contributing to your symptoms.

How We Evaluate Dry Eye

A dry eye evaluation begins with discussing your symptoms, medical history, medications, contact lens wear, and other factors that may be affecting your eyes. Your optometrist will carefully examine the surface of your eyes, tear film, eyelids, and meibomian glands to look for signs of dryness, inflammation, or other conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Because symptoms such as burning, redness, watering, and fluctuating vision can have several possible causes, treatment recommendations are based on your individual examination findings rather than symptoms alone.

Dry Eye Treatment Options

Dry eye treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity of your symptoms. After evaluating your eyes, your optometrist may recommend one or more treatments to improve comfort, support the tear film, and protect the surface of the eye.

Artificial Tears & Lubricating Eye Drops

The right type of lubricating eye drop can help improve comfort and support the tear film. Recommendations may vary depending on your individual findings.

Prescription Dry Eye Treatment

When appropriate, prescription eye drops may be recommended to help manage inflammation and improve symptoms associated with chronic dry eye.

Warm Compresses & Eyelid Care

For patients with meibomian gland dysfunction or eyelid-related dryness, warm compresses and an individualized eyelid-care routine may help improve tear-film quality.

Punctal Plugs

For certain patients, punctal plugs may be recommended to help retain natural tears on the surface of the eyes and improve lubrication.

Additional Dry Eye Treatment Options
Dry eye treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Some patients may benefit from additional therapies or procedures beyond those offered in our office. When appropriate, we can recommend or refer for additional treatment based on your examination findings and individual needs.
